(Latin, Vanity of vanities)
Vanitas, the English cognate- ‘vanity’ and the Latin adjective vanus, ‘empty’ and ‘frivolous’, the sense of emptiness, ‘Vanity of Vanities, said the preacher, all is vanity’ (Ecclesiastes 12:8)
Vanitas Vanitatum explores the allegory of contemporary still life, focusing on the symbolism of the object in art and everyday living. Contemplating fragility and mortality, Vanitas Vanitatum draws from the history and context of classical vanitas and memento mori, executing these ideals into contemporary representations.
